Countermapping Burmese Borderlands

In the four years since Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, large numbers of Burmese have taken to forests, jungles, and foreign lands to escape violence and stand in defiance of dictatorship. This ongoing project seeks to understand the spaces, cultures, and connections these exiles create to sustain themselves and their resistance to military rule.

This project uses a combination of visual and ethnographic methods to illustrate the sights, sounds, and feelings of life in Burma’s borderlands. It is in collaboration with Nicole T. Venker and an anonymous media organization comprised of exiled activists, reporters, and educators.

Stay tuned as we begin sharing work on this project soon.
